Theta II engine bearing concerns

​

Certain Kia 2.4L GDI and 2.0L T-GDI Theta II engines have been subject to significant campaigns involving premature connecting-rod-bearing wear.

​

Depending on the vehicle, symptoms can include engine knocking, a check engine light, oil-pressure warning, reduced-power operation or eventually more serious engine damage.

​

Kia Canada conducted a Product Improvement Campaign on certain 2014–2018 Optima vehicles equipped with the 2.4L GDI or 2.0L Turbo GDI engine to install its Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS), designed to detect certain vibrations associated with excessive connecting-rod-bearing wear.

​

If your Kia develops abnormal engine noise or performance problems, it is important to identify the cause before assuming the engine needs replacement.

​

Excessive engine-oil consumption

​

Certain Kia engines from the Theta, Nu, Gamma and Kappa families can develop increased oil consumption as mileage accumulates.

​

Kia has published specific procedures for accurately measuring engine-oil consumption and determining whether it is excessive.

​

If your Kia regularly requires oil between services, simply continuing to top it up doesn't identify why the oil is disappearing.

​

​

Certain Kia vehicles use a dual-clutch transmission rather than a conventional automatic.

A DCT operates differently because it uses electronically controlled clutches and can have driving characteristics closer to an automated manual transmission.

However, genuine problems can also cause abnormal shifting, hesitation, warning messages, vibration or pressure-related faults.

​

Kia has published software improvements for certain K5 and Sorento models equipped with the 8-speed DCT when abnormal shifting or transmission-pressure conditions were present.

​

GDI and T-GDI engines

​

Many Kia vehicles use Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) or turbocharged T-GDI engines.

​

These engines can provide excellent performance and efficiency, but proper maintenance is important.

​

Misfires, reduced power, rough operation, oil consumption, boost-control problems or a check engine light can have many possible causes.

​

Check engine lights and reduced-power operation

​

On certain Kia vehicles, the engine-management system may intentionally reduce available power when it detects a condition that could potentially damage the engine.

​

Reduced-power operation does not automatically mean the engine has failed.

​

The problem can involve a sensor, ignition system, pressure control, valve timing, turbo system or an internal mechanical condition.

​

We begin by analyzing fault codes and operating data before deciding which tests are required.

Cooling-system and overheating problems

​

Radiators, water pumps, thermostats, hoses, fittings and other components can begin leaking as a vehicle ages.

A small coolant leak can eventually cause overheating and turn a relatively straightforward repair into a much more expensive engine problem.

AWD systems and differentials

​

Kia now offers several types of electrified powertrains across models such as the Niro, Sportage, Sorento, Carnival and EV family.

These vehicles can incorporate high-voltage batteries, electric drive motors, inverters, specialized cooling systems and numerous electronic control modules.

​

A hybrid or EV warning message does not automatically mean the high-voltage battery has failed.

​

A complete diagnosis can determine whether a concern involves the high-voltage system, 12-volt battery, cooling system, sensor, power electronics or another component.
