VF AUTO: YOUR HYUNDAI SPECIALIST

Hyundai has evolved enormously over the past several decades.

From popular vehicles such as the Accent, Elantra, Sonata, Tucson and Santa Fe to today's IONIQ electric vehicles, Hyundai now uses a wide variety of mechanical and electronic technologies.

At VF Auto, our experience with Hyundai vehicles allows us to diagnose both traditional mechanical concerns on older models and the sophisticated powertrain and electronic systems found in newer vehicles.

COMMON HYUNDAI PROBLEMS WE DIAGNOSE AND REPAIR

Theta II engine bearing concerns

Certain Hyundai Theta II engines, including some 2.0L Turbo and 2.4L engines used in generations of the Sonata, Santa Fe Sport, Tucson and other models, have been involved in campaigns concerning premature connecting-rod-bearing wear.

Symptoms can include engine knocking, a flashing check engine light, reduced power, engine-protection mode or eventually significant internal engine damage.

Hyundai has also used its Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) on certain vehicles to detect vibrations that can indicate excessive bearing wear.

If your Hyundai develops unusual engine noise or reduced performance, proper diagnosis is important before determining that the engine requires replacement.

Because certain recalls, campaigns and warranty extensions are VIN-specific, we may also recommend checking your vehicle with Hyundai Canada when an applicable program could be involved.

Excessive engine-oil consumption

A Hyundai that regularly requires additional oil between services should be inspected.

Oil loss can be caused by an external leak, crankcase-ventilation problem, carbon deposits, internal engine wear or other conditions.

Hyundai has developed specific procedures for measuring engine-oil consumption and diagnosing vehicles with excessive consumption concerns.

Our technicians can investigate:

  • External oil leaks

  • Engine-oil level and condition

  • Actual consumption over a measured distance

  • Spark-plug condition

  • PCV system operation

  • Combustion condition

  • Compression and internal engine condition when required

Oil consumption should be measured and diagnosed, not simply managed by continually adding oil.

Dual-clutch transmission shudder, hesitation and shifting concerns

Several Hyundai models have used 7-speed or 8-speed dual-clutch transmissions.

A DCT operates differently from a conventional automatic because it uses electronically controlled clutches.

Certain Tucson, Sonata and Kona models equipped with 7-speed DCTs can exhibit low-speed vibration or clutch judder.

Hyundai has also published procedures and software updates related to hesitation, abnormal shifting, pressure concerns and control-system operation on certain 8-speed DCT applications used in Santa Fe, Sonata N Line and other performance models.

A DCT concern does not automatically mean that the complete transmission needs replacement.

VF Auto can analyze fault codes, learning values, transmission data and actual vehicle behaviour to determine whether the condition involves the clutches, hydraulic system, electronics, sensors, software or an internal mechanical problem.

GDI and T-GDI engines

Many Hyundai engines use Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) or turbocharged T-GDI technology.

Misfires, rough idle, reduced power, check engine lights, oil consumption and boost-control problems can all have several possible causes.

Our technicians analyze engine operating data and perform the appropriate mechanical and electrical tests before replacing components.

Carbon deposits and rough engine operation

Direct-injection engines can develop combustion-chamber or intake deposits depending on mileage, use and operating conditions.

Deposits can contribute to symptoms such as oil consumption, misfires, rough operation or reduced performance.

However, symptoms alone do not automatically mean that cleaning is the correct repair.

We diagnose the vehicle first to determine whether carbon buildup is actually contributing to the problem.

IVT transmission concerns

Certain Elantra, Kona, Venue and other Hyundai models use an Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT).

Unusual acceleration, noise, vibration, reduced performance or a transmission warning may have several possible causes.

Using the correct fluid specification is particularly important with these transmissions.

We can analyze fault codes, fluid condition where applicable and transmission operating data before recommending repairs.

Cooling-system and overheating concerns

Radiators, water pumps, thermostats, hoses, fittings and other cooling-system components can begin leaking as a vehicle ages.

A small coolant leak can eventually cause overheating and turn a relatively straightforward repair into a much more expensive engine problem.

We can pressure-test the system and accurately determine where the coolant is being lost.

AWD system concerns

Many Tucson, Santa Fe, Kona, Palisade and other Hyundai models are equipped with all-wheel drive.

An AWD warning, vibration or unusual driving behaviour can be related to an ABS sensor, wheel bearing, tire condition, driveshaft, AWD coupling, differential or electronic control system.

Our technicians diagnose the entire system before recommending component replacement.

ABS, HECU and electronic braking systems

Modern Hyundai vehicles use an electronic hydraulic control unit to operate ABS, traction and stability-control functions.

Certain Hyundai vehicles have been subject to safety recalls involving the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU).

However, an ABS, ESC or Brake warning does not automatically mean the HECU itself has failed. A wheel-speed sensor, wiring, wheel bearing, electrical supply or another component can produce similar symptoms.

VF Auto can diagnose the system and identify the actual cause.

When a concern may be related to a safety campaign, we also recommend checking the VIN with Hyundai Canada.

Brakes, suspension and wheel bearings

Quebec road and winter conditions can be particularly demanding on braking and suspension systems.

Wheel bearings, stabilizer links, bushings, control arms, struts, calipers and other components can eventually develop looseness, corrosion or noise.

Humming, clunking, vibration or uneven tire wear should be properly inspected before parts are replaced.

Electrical, battery and charging-system problems

A weak battery can cause much more than slow starting on a modern Hyundai.

Low system voltage can create multiple warning lights, messages and electronic problems at the same time.

We test the battery, charging system, electrical connections, grounds and individual circuits before replacing electronic modules.

IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6 and ICCU concerns

Hyundai electric vehicles use a very different electrical architecture from conventional gasoline vehicles.

The IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 use an Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) that plays an important role in vehicle charging and maintaining the 12-volt electrical system.

Certain IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 vehicles have been involved in campaigns addressing ICCU failures that can stop charging the 12-volt battery and potentially lead to reduced or lost drive power.

A charging concern, repeatedly discharged 12-volt battery or EV warning message therefore requires proper diagnosis before assuming the high-voltage battery has failed.

Hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric systems

Tucson Hybrid, Tucson Plug-in Hybrid, Santa Fe Hybrid, Sonata Hybrid, Elantra Hybrid, Kona Electric and the IONIQ family use sophisticated systems incorporating high-voltage batteries, electric motors, inverters, power electronics and specialized cooling circuits.

A hybrid or EV warning can originate from many different components.

A high-voltage trouble code does not automatically mean the high-voltage battery requires replacement.

Accurate diagnosis is especially important because of the cost and complexity of these systems.

WHY CHOOSE VF AUTO FOR YOUR HYUNDAI?

Hyundai-specialized technicians

Our team has the experience required to work with Hyundai MPI, GDI and T-GDI engines, automatic, IVT and DCT transmissions, AWD systems and Hyundai's hybrid and electric technologies.

Experience with Hyundai engine concerns

Engine knocking and excessive oil consumption require more than simply reading fault codes.

We can perform the necessary tests to evaluate engine condition and advise you when a concern may also warrant checking with Hyundai for an applicable recall, campaign or warranty program.

DCT and IVT knowledge

These transmissions operate differently from conventional automatic transmissions.

Our diagnostic approach considers mechanical operation, clutch operation, hydraulic pressure, sensors, electronics and adaptation values before repairs are recommended.

Advanced diagnostics

Modern Hyundai vehicles contain numerous electronic control modules communicating with one another.

Our professional equipment allows us to investigate multiple systems rather than simply reading a check engine light.

Hybrid and electric vehicle systems

Electrified vehicles require a different diagnostic approach.

The high-voltage battery, inverter, charging system, electric motors, 12-volt system and cooling circuits need to be considered together before expensive components are replaced.
