​

Coolant leaks around the water pump and thermostat housing are well documented on several generations of Audi's EA888 engine.

​

Audi published a specific repair procedure covering water pumps and thermostat housings on 2013–2019 EA888 Evo2 and 2015–2019 EA888 Gen3 engines.

​

Symptoms can include:

• Falling coolant level

• Low-coolant warning

• Coolant smell

• Leakage underneath the vehicle

• Residue around the pump or thermostat housing

• Overheating in more severe cases

 

It is important to determine exactly which component is leaking instead of automatically replacing the entire assembly.

​

Audi offered a U.S. warranty extension covering the timing chain and tensioner on certain A3, A4, A5, A6, Q5 and TT vehicles equipped with specific 2.0L EA888 applications.

• Difficult starting

 

In severe cases, incorrect engine timing can lead to substantial internal engine damage.

Engine-oil consumption – certain A4, A5 and Q5 2.0 TFSI models

​

Certain earlier Audi 2.0 TFSI engines can develop increased oil consumption.

Audi published a specific oil-consumption measurement and repair procedure for certain A4, A5 and Q5 vehicles equipped with the CAEB engine, including crankcase-pressure-system inspection and a controlled consumption test.

TFSI engines use direct fuel injection.

Audi e-tron vehicles use high-voltage batteries, electric motors, onboard chargers, DC/DC converters and sophisticated thermal-management systems.

 

An electric-system warning or charging concern does not automatically mean the high-voltage battery needs replacement.

For example, Audi published a technical bulletin for certain 2024 Q8 e-tron vehicles in which a software issue in the high-voltage charging unit could cause the 12-volt battery to discharge.

​

This is a good example of why proper diagnosis matters: a battery symptom can sometimes originate from software or another control unit rather than the battery itself.
