COMMON MERCURY PROBLEMS WE DIAGNOSE AND REPAIR

Intake-manifold coolant leaks – 4.6L V8

​

Certain Ford/Mercury 4.6L two-valve V8 engines used intake manifolds containing composite sections.

​

On certain Grand Marquis vehicles, the intake manifold can develop a crack near the coolant crossover and begin leaking coolant.

​

Ford specifically published technical information regarding intake-manifold coolant-crossover leakage on certain 1996–2001 Grand Marquis vehicles.

​

Symptoms can include:

• Falling coolant level

• Coolant smell

• Visible leakage around the intake manifold

• Coolant near the alternator

• Overheating in more severe cases

 

VF Auto can pressure-test the cooling system and accurately locate the leak before replacing components.

Automatic transmission concerns – Grand Marquis and other rear-wheel-drive models

​

Grand Marquis vehicles use Ford automatic transmissions from the 4R70W/4R75 family.

​

As mileage accumulates, concerns can include:

• Harsh shifting

• Slipping

• Torque-converter vibration

• Transmission noise

Ford published technical information covering internal transmission and torque-converter concerns on later Grand Marquis vehicles.

Rear air suspension – certain Grand Marquis and Marauder models

​

Certain Mercury Grand Marquis and Marauder vehicles use rear air suspension.

​

As these systems age, the air springs, lines, compressor, ride-height sensor or electrical connections can develop faults.

​

Symptoms can include:

• Rear of the vehicle sitting low

• One side lower than the other

• Vehicle lowering while parked

• Compressor operating frequently

• Suspension failing to raise

 

A compressor that operates constantly is not necessarily the original problem. It may simply be trying to compensate for a leak elsewhere in the system.

​

We inspect the complete system before replacing components.

​

Front suspension, steering and chassis wear

​

The Grand Marquis platform is extremely durable, but today's vehicles have accumulated many years of use.

Control arms, ball joints, stabilizer links, bushings, shocks, springs, wheel bearings and steering components can develop looseness or noise.

​

Clunking, vague steering, vibration or uneven tire wear deserves a complete inspection.

​

We identify the worn component before recommending repairs.

​

4.6L V8 misfires and ignition problems

​

4.6L engines use ignition systems that can develop misfires as they age.

​

An ignition coil, spark plug, injector, intake leak or mechanical condition can all trigger a check engine light and misfire codes.

​

A cylinder-specific code does not automatically mean that cylinder's ignition coil requires replacement.

​

We can move components, analyze misfire data and perform the required tests to determine the cause.

Marauder 4.6L DOHC

​

The Mercury Marauder uses a higher-performance four-valve DOHC version of Ford's 4.6L V8.

​

Although it shares many concepts with other Ford Modular engines, its DOHC configuration has its own service requirements and components.

​

Because these vehicles have become relatively rare, accurate diagnosis and correct parts selection are particularly important.

​

VF Auto can handle maintenance, engine diagnostics, cooling systems, transmissions, differentials, suspension and other Marauder systems.

Sable camshaft-position sensor and synchronizer concerns

​

Certain Mercury Sable models equipped with Ford 3.0L engines use a mechanical camshaft-position sensor synchronizer.

​

Ford published technical information covering synchronizer installation and faults capable of producing:

• Check engine lights

• P0340, P1309 and related codes

• Hesitation

• Loss of power

• Unstable idle

• Poor fuel economy

 

A camshaft-position-sensor code therefore does not always mean the electrical sensor itself has failed.

​

The mechanical synchronizer and its installation also need to be checked.

​

Check engine lights and drivability problems

​

On an older vehicle, a check engine light can be caused by ignition, fuel delivery, vacuum leaks, sensors, EGR systems, emissions components or mechanical problems.

​

We use the code as a starting point and perform the appropriate tests to identify the actual cause.

​

Cooling-system and overheating concerns

​

Radiators, water pumps, thermostats, cooling fans, hoses, intake manifolds and coolant reservoirs can all develop faults as a vehicle ages.

​

A small leak that is ignored can eventually cause overheating and much more significant engine damage.

We can pressure-test the system and verify proper operation before replacing components.

Brake systems and corrosion

​

The age of today's Mercury vehicle population makes corrosion inspections particularly important.

Brake lines, calipers, parking-brake cables, brackets and other components can be affected by years of road-salt exposure.

Wheel bearings, driveshafts and differentials

​

On rear-wheel-drive vehicles such as the Grand Marquis and Marauder, vibration or humming can originate from several different areas:

Identifying the frequency and source of a vibration prevents unnecessary replacement of multiple components.
